One of the quirks of British food is the idea of serving lamb with mint sauce. For many this seems like an odd combination - as it should be, given the history.
The idea of mint sauce is due to a law passed during the reign of Queen Elizabeth which banned the eating of lamb and mutton without these being served with bitter herbs. The hope was to discourage the English from eating lamb, so that the sheep could be exported to France to aid the wool trade, which was a major source of revenue. Of course this didn't work, the people just got used to eating their lamb with mint sauce and over time this became the way that it would be served anyway.
There has been a strong taste of bitter herbs of late.
I don't know how long this will last, but I am going to suspend my blog for a while. Sorry folks. I'm sure my lone reader will miss this, hopefully I'll be back soon.
For pudding me and the girls decided to make the world's ugliest trifle. It wasn't quite as bad as I'd hoped, they made too much of an effort to make it look good. Good effort though.
