Diary and Notes

Oh no - the old folks from the stupid counties are here. It's only a short visit and they aren't staying with us but they do want to be fed. Sadly, my Mum will eat almost nothing. Having been raised in one of the poor parts of old London before the invention of sashimi, pret-a-manger avacado & herb salad wraps and the now ubiquitous bulgogi, she eats almost nothing but traditional Cockney food.

Offer her a tasty prawn patia and it’s “No way”, but a pint of prawns “Way to go”. A tasty Thai red curry is off, but a bowl of jellied eels with salt and vinegar is on. Some sushi and she'll turn green, but a bowl of live elvers – that’s green for go. Getting the idea?

Today was Good Friday and as is traditional I ran out early to the bakers to get some hot cross buns for breakfast. If I am that devoted to my traditions, you can be sure we were having fish for dinner - but the only way my Mum will eat fish, is coated in breadcrumbs and fried, served with chips of course.

Now we did have chips with our lamb tikka yesterday but if guests make special requests then I shouldn’t really refuse, so fish and chips it was. I bought a big piece of cod, but it turned out to not be quite big enough for everyone ,so (and breaking with the Good Friday tradition) I cooked a few big kosher hot dogs as well.

Today turned out to be fast food day, all home made. Afterwards, as my Mum had brought one of the other grandchildren with her we decided to try the ice cream parlour again, after the grazing incident of yesterday. I got a photo of us all in the mirrored wall.

I hope Jesus doesn't mind me having meat on good Friday, perhaps he'll take some small comfort that it was at least kosher.
