Diary and Notes

My old friend Malcolm Smith used to say: There are two type of people in this world - doers and thinkers. And I'm a drinker.

Wisdom indeed.

So after breaking my fast yesterday and drinking too much of Matt's home made wine, how was I feeling? Well as you may have been able to tell from last night's blog and its slightly sombre tone, I was a little worse for wear. My blog usually takes about 15 minutes to write, but last night, as my fingers tapped drunkenly at the keyboard, it took me over an hour. Alcohol is not the best method of getting things done.

In the morning I had a headache and was feeling pretty dire. Also I had to go to work which didn't help. We've all been here, we all know what it is like. And we all do it again and again.

Good news on the vindaloo sauce. My good chum Ian Dennel who's birthday is today has taken it off my hands. He's off to get a take-away curry tonight from the Mahbub in Chorlton. The Mahbub's food is pretty good and the owner (who we call Mr Mahbub because we don't actually know his family name) lives over the road from me and is a lovely chap so I advise everybody in Chorlton to pop along. I've convinced Ian to have some of my sauce with his curry - perhaps he'll give us a review.

Menu

  • Basque Style Chicken (Poulet Basquaise)
  • Rice

    Ingredients*

    Basque Style Chicken
Chicken Pieces (legs, wings etc - on the bone)
    1 Onion
    1 Pepper
    1/2 Stick Celery
    2 Cloves Garlic
    2 tsp Spanish Smoked Paprika
    1 Can Tomatoes
    1 Glass White Wine
    Handful of Olives
    2 Rashers Streaky Bacon
    1 TBSP Olive Oil
    Salt and Pepper
    Flat Leaf Parsley

    Preparation

  • Basque Style Chicken: Fry the chicken pieces in the olive oil until turning brown. Add the bacon, sliced onion and chopped celery and cook another 10 mins until the onions are really soft. Add the garlic and sweat a little longer, then add the wine, pepper (chopped) and the paprika - cook a little longer to let the alcohol evaporate. Stir well, pour over the tomatoes, stir in the olives. Season and put in the oven for 1 hour. Sprinkle parsley over as a garnish and to irritate the kids who don't like their food being played with. Really, really easy.
