How many different ways are there of cooking meat and potatoes for dinner in which the resulting meals are all completely different? There
must be millions. You could spend every day for the rest of your life eating meat and potatoes and never have the same dinner
twice. I Googled it and found a gastropub with the name Meat and Potatoes but was a little disappointed
to find the menu was heavy with salads, pastas, risottos and flatbreads.
Only two of the seven main courses for dinner actually had meat and potatoes in them - what a bloomin' jip.
There's a Belle and Sebastian song about this too - but again it's not about meat and potatoes but slapping your girlfiend to get her aroused.
I wonder if the gastropub has this on their playlist. I'm going to email them to find out.
So today it was good hearty food, nothing fancy with balsamic vinegar or black truffle. Since starting my new blog I think this is
my favourite dinner by far. I really enjoyed it. Of course the picture above isn't all the food I ate. I managed four potatoes and all the
meat was gone by the time I had finished.
And if you are wondering whether Isis is feeling better: For breakfast she ate a bowl of cereal and a bacon sandwich and drank a glass of juice and a big cup of milk. She had an
apple about 10.30 then three bowls of home made macaroni cheese for lunch. She went to a party in the afternoon where they gave her fishfingers and chips
before returning home to eat a chicken drumstick and two pork ribs, then more milk before bed. I think she nibbled some other stuff during the day
as well - oh and the odd cake.
I think she's fine.
Toni and the kids made some cupcakes today - very tasty.

The BBQ sauce recipe may seem a little odd. If you read around there are thousands of sites with recipes for authentic
Southern Style rubs and marinades, involving twenty or so ingredients, two days cooking and your own
smokehouse. This recipe is very simple, but is really, really tasty. It's sweet and spicy and very sticky and I
wholeheartedly recommend you have a go.
Menu
BBQ Ribs
BBQ Chicken
Baked Potatoes
Peas and Sweetcorn
Coleslaw
Ingredients*
BBQ Ribs/Chicken
1 Rack Baby Back Ribs
Chicken Pieces - legs and wings
2 tsp Chinese Five Spice Powder
2 TBSP Hoi Sin Sauce
2 TBSP Tomato Ketchup
1 TBSP HP Fruity Sauce
1 TBSP Water
Note; The hoi-sin sauce sold in Chinese supermarkets is not the same as the stir fry sauce sold in most Western supermarkets
(ie Blue Dragon or Sharwoods). I'd recommend Lee-Lum-Kee. I
think I've tried every brand available in Britain and this is my favourite by far.
I used the breasts from a chicken on Wednesday and today
it was time for the legs and wings. The rest I'm boiling for stock or soup.
Preparation
Chop the ribs into individual pieces and the chicken into drumsticks etc. Sprinkle the five spice
powder over the meat and leave covered in the fridge for at least four hours.
Mix sauces and the ater together to make the BBQ sauce.
Ribs: Place on a baking tray and cover with foil. Bake slowly (130c) for 1 - 1/2 hours. Drain off all the
liquid then pour over 1/2 the marinade. Bake for a further 1 hour at 150c, turning every 15 minutes to make sure they
are well coated.
Chicken: Cover with sauce and bake at 150c for 3/4 hour, turning every 15 mins as with the pork. Pour the sauce in the
pan over the chicken before serving.
Potatoes: Skewer and bake for 1 - 1/2 hours at a low shelf in the over. 20 mins before finishing rub a little
olive oil and salt onto the skin to help them crisp nicely.
Today’s Ratings:
Isis: Chicken, Pork - yum. Peas and Sweetcorn - OK.
Eve: Potatoes - yum. Peas - OK.
Olias: One day Olias will choose not to have a great dinner, but it wasn't today.
