Diary and Notes

Tonight was one of those nights that just drain you. It's all my own doing, but it's still just exhausting.

After dinner we played for a bit, watched an episode of Futurama, did some dressing up, then read Hansel & Gretel and the Elves & the Shoemaker. All was going swimmingly. Eve was getting tired, but Isis wanted to stay up a bit later.

A cunning plan was hatched, Toni would put Olias to bed, I'd put Eve to bed and then come down and entertain Isis for a bit longer. It was all going so well...

Children rarely do what you want them too. Their nature is to do their own thing.

Of course Isis wasn't in the mood to play on her own for ten minutes, it was about two before she was in the bedroom and disturbing us. I tried singing a song - Eve woke up.

It went on.

Chatting, playing, chatting.

I explained to Isis it was now too late and she would have to go to bed too.

And on it went.

Playing, chatting.

And on...

An hour. A whole hour. Already tired from sleep depravation, work, cooking, playing and general stress I was starting to hallucinate.

"Go to sleep."

Chatting...

"Go to sleep."

"I need a wee."

"OK. - Now go to sleep."

"I need a drink."

"OK - now go to sleep."

"I'm cold, I need a hot water bottle."

Every last excuse to stay awake just a little longer.

Is this how it is for everybody? I'm not sure it is.

All my friends who have kids just tell them to go to bed and off they trot, as good as gold. Surely something is wrong here.

It's not like this every night, but sometimes it's a marathon when it should be a stroll.

Eventually they both went to sleep, after me singing some bedtime songs.

So let's all have a good night's sleep. Get in bed with a cup of cocoa and a hot water bottle and listen to somebody who can really sing you to sleep. Click here. I'd have put it on my blog but copyright won't let me.

Sleep well.
